ProTeam backpacks make a lasting impact

Some vacuums tell stories. Consider, for example, a QuarterVac that came into ProTeam for repair recently.  The vacuum was 21-years old, one of the original lightweight backpacks ever made.

“As you can imagine, we don’t have parts to repair a 21-year old vacuum,” says Steve Shideler, a repair technician with ProTeam. “This vacuum is in awesome condition and still works, but the suction wasn’t quite enough anymore for the wood floor installer it belongs to.”

That installer is Bob Bassett, the owner of Executive Hardwood Floors in Boise, Idaho. He inherited the backpack 15 years ago from a friend in the industry, and has used it on nearly every project since. Routine maintenance was all it took to keep it going (and going and going). After cleaning up from sanding and installation jobs, he would take the lid off his vacuum and blow out the contacts with an air compressor to remove fine dust. He also emptied the filter regularly and kept the vacuum hung up in his trailer when on the move.

“The vacuum is just killer,” says Bassett. “It took a lot of abuse, and it’s been through quite a bit. The friend who gave it to me did the same stuff I did. I knew the vacuum was old but I didn’t think about it.”

The 21-year old vacuum is now in the ProTeam archives, along with a handful of other classics. Bassett received a reconditioned SuperCoach for his years of loyalty and old-school donation.

IBS Services Group, a commercial cleaning operation in Manhattan and Long Island, recently told us of a similar story. Soon after the IBS opened for business in 1988, they bought one of the first ProTeam backpacks.

“I think we have number 13,” says Owen O’Mahony, vice president of IBS. “And we still use it on a daily basis.”

The Evolution of Quiet Vacuums

A product innovation by ProTeam® gives cleaning professionals more flexibility in deciding when and how they clean. This advancement, called QuietPower®, is a technology that lowers the sound a vacuum makes to whisper-quiet levels, giving day cleaners another tool in environments where sound levels are critical.

QuietPower technology is now available in the QuietPro® BP HEPA backpack vacuum and the QuietPro® CN HEPA canister vacuum. Both vacuums feature a switch that allows operators to quickly shift from “power mode” to the lower decibel “quiet mode.”

The QuietPro BP HEPA runs at 60 decibels when in power mode and 51 decibels in quiet mode. The QuietPro CN HEPA canister tests even quieter, with a decibel level of 55 in power mode and 47 in quiet mode. Most commercial vacuums test between 61 and 85 decibels. The average sound level of a typical office environment is 65 decibels.

“The QuietPro is a great piece of equipment for daytime cleaning,” says Larry McMillian, president of D&K Fresh Start Janitorial Services Inc. in Winston Salem, NC. “Customers always comment on how quiet it is.”

A Better Fit for Productivity

Talk about job stress. The repetitive motion of pushing a heavy upright vacuum across hundreds of square feet of carpet and flooring, day after day, can cause enormous body fatigue and strain for maintenance workers. When ProTeam®—the innovator of the lightweight, backpack vacuum—designed the first model in 1987, they knew it would help clean large buildings much faster and more comfortably.

Now, independent studies have proven that idea. Two studies by the Ohio State University Department of Surgery Division of Orthopaedics and the Battelle Memorial Institute, determined that the ease-of-use and ergonomic design of ProTeam’s backpack vacuums allowed workers to vacuum more than twice the area in half the time. Importantly, this enormous increase in productivity took less than half the energy and effort it would to clean the same area with an upright.

ProTeam’s new Super QuarterVac®—a more compact, lightweight version of the Super CoachVac®—was designed to comfortably and ergonomically fit even smaller members of a cleaning staff, while providing high-powered suction and lift.

ProTeam Keeps the Upright Improvements Coming

The 2009 ProForce 1500XP upright vacuum has some new improved features designed to make the units even more bullet-proof than before.  The base cover, motor housing and vacuum handle have all been redesigned for better durability and wear.  The lower duct inside the filter housing has an improved air path at the wand interface to reduce the potential for clogs.  The back of the filter housing has a new sleeve feature to assist in proper handle pin assembly.  We have also modified the design around the lower detent springs (used in lowering the vacuuming when operating) to make the articulating action more robust.  The ProForce uprights still carry an unmatched 3 year warranty. Change your filters for optimal vacuum performance.

As an original equipment manufacturer, ProTeam recommends that you regularly check and change your vacuum filters to ensure proper filtration and optimal vacuum performance. If you notice a decrease in suction or hear a high pitch to the vacuum motor, it’s most likely time to change your vacuum’s Intercept Micro® Filter, and clean the other three filters inside. To maximize the suction and effectiveness of your cleaning machine—and the lifespan of the product—it is imperative that you establish a regular filter maintenance program, where all cleaning workers are required to examine the vacuum filter status before and after every cleaning shift. This will make your cleaning jobs a heck of a lot easier, and raise the satisfaction level of your building occupants to code GREEN (that means happy!).
